Original copper engraving, hand coloured with watercolour. This image after a painting by Canaletto in 1754. The vues d'optique were designed to be viewed through a zograscope. Title in both English and French. 25 x 39 cm (image); 33 x 48 cm (sheet). In excellent condition. Blank to verso.
A zograscope is an optical device for magnifying flat images, as the shape of the lens enhanced the sense of the depth shown in the picture. The precursor to 3D images! These were very fashionable in the late 18th century.
